The World Upside Down

There was an orchard

on a hillside

just above the Mangawhara –

apple trees

whose shadows in the summer

were as big as beach umbrellas.

From the creek it sometimes seemed

that the trees were shadows

and that the shadows were the trees –

or that each tree had its double

and that one was the other

and that the other was also one.

I think of their red striated fruit

the colour of a schoolgirl’s cotton dress.

Beneath a willow’s green canopy

I watch the world float upside down

a red dragon fly flitting from cloud to white cloud

the water so still that the creek might be thinking of flowing back

up into the hills. Downstream from a swingbridge

a father once built, planks missing now,

I try to recall

Red Delicious or Gala

nameless apples.
